Ulveston Canal

A mixed fishery of about 1.25 miles in length and about 20 metres wide.

Most pegs are about 6ft deep down the middle rising to just 1ft under your feet.
There are a good head of quality tench between 3-6lb the record fish being over 7lb.
Big catches of tench can be caught with bags of 100lb not unknown.
Four or five tench to 6lb is quite a common catch until the fish finally 'wise up' and get a bit finicky.
There is also a good head of bream that run to 5-6lb and on a calm summers day can be seen at the surface around pegs 40-45 with hundreds of fish from ½lb-5lb making the surface of the water black.
The roach are mainly small fish and don't really start to show until the Autumn months.
Five thousand 6-8inch roach were stocked in 2000 but these fish haven't really shown yet.
There are the odd carp or two but very hard to catch and are only worth fishing for by the truly patient angler.
Rudd, Perch, Eels are all also present with eels being the only fish to respond sometimes in matches on a hot summers day.
In the winter months local anglers fish for the jack pike that are present in quite large numbers. A pike of over 20lbs has been caught but these are very rare.
The canal can be fished on a season or a day ticket.
Season and day tickets can be bought on the bank, or the local Tourist Information Centre which can both be found in Ulverston town centre.
